USS ODYSSEY (NCC-9000)

The USS ODYSSEY, NCC-9000, was an Odyssey-class starship in service between 2411-2413. The first starship of her class and the fifth Starfleet vessel to bear the name, construction of the USS Odyssey was started and finished under the highest secrecy. At the time, word of the forthcoming Seventh War of Retribution was spreading through Starfleet Intelligence, and to counter the threat of the mysterious Enforcers, a new kind of warship was designed and developed.

The USS Odyssey was a city in space. With its construction, the Federation broke the Treaty of Algeron by equipping her with a cloaking device. With transwarp engines, a bio-regenerative hull matrix, and a crew complement of over two thousand personnel, the Odyssey was made for war. It was the deadliest starship of her generation, her offensive power only surpassed by the launch of the USS Phoenix twenty years later.

Following the destruction of the flagship USS Olympus by the Kem D'Neel in 2411, the survivors, under Captain Johnathan West, were assigned to the Odyssey, with a mission focus to fight the Kem D'Neel whenever they arrived within reach. After several shakedown missions, including the discovery of a new Iconian gateway, Starfleet promoted West to Commodore and made the Odyssey the lead ship of Task Force 115, the nucleus of a war-fleet whose objective was the bring the Kem D'Neel to battle.

The USS Odyssey led the Starfleet contingent at the great Battle of Coriana III, when the Kem D' Neel were finally defeated. Afterward, her task force was stood down and she was reassigned to the 6th Fleet. Later in 2412, the Odyssey participated in the testing of the C-CAT starship computer system, and carried the flag of the Federation into the Gamma Quadrant to rescue Federation citizens caught up in the Dominion Civil War of that year.

In 2413, Commodore West became the commander of the 6th Fleet itself, and the centre seat of the USS Odyssey passed to Captain Sean Winters. Unfortunately, nobody knew that Sean Winters was a Pretender - an agent of the Locusta Regime, who had crossed into this universe, murdered his counterpart and taken his place. Winters stole the Odyssey and attempted to make war on Starfleet, but was ultimately defeated by a mutiny of his own officers.

The centre seat was then assigned to Captain Jacob Sterling, who took command at a pivotal moment in 2413 - the secession of Vulcan from the Federation. When a Romulan fleet arrived in the Vega system, the Odyssey moved to counter them, but the Romulans were not at Vega to pay a social call. Manipulated by the Locusta, they attacked the Vegan Vigilance Platform, sparking the Incursion of 2413. In the ensuing battle, the USS Odyssey was crippled and her crew captured by the Romulans. The ship itself was destroyed by the victorious Romulan fleet, bringing a tragic end to a glorious, too-short career.
