40 ERIDANI II (VULCAN)

The planet VULCAN is the second planet of the 40 Eridani system, a trinary star system between two and four days' travel from Earth. It is home to the Vulcans, a warp-capable humanoid species renowned for their logical minds and stoic demeanour, who are one of the founding members of the United Federation of Planets. Since 2432, Vulcan has been the capital world of the Federation.

The planet has a higher gravity, thinner atmosphere, and higher temperatures than Earth. A popular misconception is that Vulcan is one huge desert - in fact, there are some small seas, and the planet's water table is mostly underground. There are several tourist attractions on the planet, including ancient ruins, active volcanoes, wilderness preserves, and cooled lava fields.

Vulcans made First Contact with Humans in 2063 after observing them for over a century. The Vulcans had already made contact with Andorians and Tellarites, and were rivals with both species in areas like colonisation. When the time came for all four species to unite, Earth, as newcomer to the group, was chosen to be the capital of the new alliance.

Vulcans practice suppression of their emotions and the pursuit of logic as a personal philosophy. Generally, they are pacifists, but this has not stopped many of them from serving in Starfleet. Many Vulcans have also served the Federation as ambassadors and diplomats, and some have risen to the highest offices.
