THE BATTLE OF CORIANA III

The BATTLE OF CORIANA III was a limited naval engagement fought in 2412 in the Coriana system. It was a pivotal event in galactic politics and the culmination of the Seventh War of Retribution. It occurred in early 2412, between the united forces of the Alpha Quadrant powers - Klingons, Romulans, Federation, and some Cardassians - and the fleet of the Kem D'Neel.

For much of the previous year, the Kem D'Neel had been indiscriminately slaughtering their way across the Alpha Quadrant. At the end of 2411, the Federation and Romulans had lost a combined total of almost a trillion people. Dozens of colony worlds were destroyed, hundreds of starships had been obliterated, and the Kem D'Neel seemed poised to eradicate all life in the quadrant.

The Federation threw its efforts into diplomacy with its neighbours, seeking to unite them all against the common foe. The prophecies of the Book of Coreb were made public, and faced with the choice to either unite or die, the peoples of the Alpha Quadrant joined forces. It took many months, but the Kem D'Neel fleet was finally brought to battle in the once-prosperous Coriana system, around a deadworld that had once been home to millions of people.

When the battle got underway, the Kem D'Neel asked for a ceasefire. To the amazement of those gathered there, they announced that their original purpose - the unification of the Alpha Quadrant races - had been achieved. Then their fleet cloaked itself and departed, ending the Seventh War of Retribution.

Coriana III became a marking point in the history of Starfleet. A new generation of veteran Starfleet officers came to the fore, who made their mark on the Federation for the rest of that decade. Although there are many unanswered questions about the battle, it stands as compelling proof that the differences between the races of the Alpha Quadrant are, perhaps, not so great as they think.
