Personal History
Ryan lived in New York City with his mother Evelyn until the age of 8, when his mother took a position as a clinical biologist in Tycho City, Luna. It was during this time that Ryan became very rebellious and difficult to deal with. He had difficulty in school, always a troublemaker. He was very intelligent but lacked focus. When he was 14, his mother sent him to live with his maternal grandparents in San Francisco. This is where his love of history began. He loved hearing his grandfather talk about the Roman Empire, the American Civil War and the histories of other planets like Vulcan and Alpha Centauri. But this curiosity with history led him to begin to read the personal logs of his father and grandfather.

Ryan's grandfather was Diego Santiago, a Star fleet officer who served on the USS Endeavour, USS Farragut and USS Zeus under the command of truly great commanding officers such as Captain James Dennison, Captain Jacob Sterling and Captain Elspeth Renata. Commander Santiago resigned his commission after a string of unfortunate events that began with the court martial of his good friend, Commander Gideon Stark, and the deaths of his wife Miriya and his good friend Captain Jacob Sterling. His wife Miriya was murdered by the Trinity Syndicate when they were on leave celebrating their anniversary which devastated him. Captain Sterling convinced Diego to stay on but shortly thereafter, Diego was driven over the edge when Captain Sterling sacrificed his life saving Diego during one of their missions. This caused him to do down a dark path of alcohol, depression, which finally lead to his suicide.

When he would read about the adventures of grandfather with Captain Sterling and those of his dad, Ryan began to think that he belonged in Starfleet. It was then Ryan began to focus. He was no longer the trouble maker. He graduated at the top of his high school class and went on to Starfleet Academy. Ryan's time at the Academy had its ups and downs, especially when some cadets found out about his grandfather's suicide. He was tormented as the grandson of someone who was weak and who couldn't take the pressure of command. He almost lost it all, but fate would have him meet John Metcalf, local tavern owner, who was a friends with Ryan's father and grandfather. It was Mr. Metcalf's folksy wisdom that kept Ryan grounded and helped him complete his time at the Academy. It was also during that time that Ryan became aware of his hereditary condition known as Esperblindness. The condition came from his father's side of the family. Esperblindness is a condition found in a small number of Terrans. Esperblind people emit no brainwave patterns and therefore their emotions or thoughts cannot be read or affected by empaths or telepaths. He also found out that his great grandmother Dr. Celina Santiago, who at one time lived in the Fabrini colonies, had worked on research with Dr. Llewelyn Keriden of Star Fleet Intelligence on this condition. This condition also gives Ryan pre-cognitive abilities. He may get a good or bad feeling about something, a hunch but it is not specific.
