SAN FRANCISCO

The city of SAN FRANCISCO is situated on the western coast of the North American continent on Earth. It is one of the capital cities of the planet, and is steeped in Federation history.

San Francisco was the city where the Articles of Federation was signed in 2161 between Humans, Andorians, Vulcans, and Tellarites. Although the city of Paris was chosen as the site of the office of the Federation's civilian government, San Francisco was selected as the site of Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy, both buildings being located in a large complex called the Presidio. Tens of thousands of Starfleet personnel work or pass through the city on a daily basis, and it is the hub of Starfleet's entire operations for several sectors of space. Every Starfleet officer has lived in the city for at least the period of time they were attending the Academy, and the city's population has swelled significantly to accommodate them.

In the 25th century, the city is a teeming metroplex of over eight million people, and has swallowed up the entire bay area conurbation. It is one of the most beautifully landscaped cities on the planet, and given its link to Federation history, is a strong tourism draw in its own right.
