USS ZEUS (NCC-6001)

The USS ZEUS, NCC-6001, was an Olympus-class starship in service between 2411-2413. The second starship of her class and the second Starfleet vessel to bear the name, the ZEUS was the second starship from the brand new Olympus-class to be launched.

Over 900 metres long, the Olympus-class was one of the largest starship designs ever constructed by the Federation. Equipped with both a transwarp drive and bio-regenerative hull matrix that allowed the ship's computer to automatically begin to repair any sustained damage, the much-vaunted Olympus-class was the pinnacle of Starfleet's engineering and construction efforts up to that time.

Launched in mid-2411 under Captain Jacob Sterling, the ship was assigned to the old Klingon frontier, patrolling through the dead systems laid waste in the aftermath of the Klingon-Romulan War twenty years earlier. The ZEUS squared off against Klingon pirates, discovered a virus that had been brought from a future timeline, encountered the entity known as Q, and fought and survived an encounter with a Kem D'Neel starship at the outbreak of the Seventh War of Retribution.

The ZEUS was present at Coriana III, when the races of the Alpha Quadrant banded together for their survival. She acquitted herself well in the battle, most notably rescuing the crew of the stricken USS Pacifica.

Following the conclusion of the war, the Zeus resumed her border patrol duties, encountering Jem'Hadar and collectivised Borg, before Captain Sterling was reassigned at the end of 2412.

His successor, Captain Gideon Stark, was not destined to have a long career as the Zeus' commander. The USS ZEUS was attacked and crippled in the Beta Orell system by an alien starship that used trans-dimensional technology. It was one of the first attacks on the Federation by the deadly Locusta Regime. Several members of the crew were marooned on Beta Orell for many months, until Captain Stark stole the hulk of the Zeus in order to rescue them. This act brought down the curtain on the Zeus' (and his own) career, as she was much too badly damaged ever to return to front-line service.
