PARIS

The city of PARIS was one of the largest cities on Earth. Formerly the capital of the old nation-state of France, it was also the home of many prestigious Federation buildings, the most important being the offices of the President and Vice-President of the United Federation of Planets.

Before the foundation of the Federation, the United Earth government was inaugurated in 2130 in the Palais de la Concorde. When the Federation was founded 31 years later, Paris became its capital. The Federation Assembly and Council used the Palais de la Concorde building, with the President's office a short distance away in the same complex.

The embassies of all foreign interstellar governments were in Paris, including the embassies of the Romulan Star Empire, the Klingon Empire, the Cardassian Union, the Orion Syndicate, the Dominion, and the Borg Federation.

Paris was also the home of the Starfleet Medical Academy. Those wishing to become commissioned medical officers in Starfleet attended this school, and not Starfleet Academy in San Francisco.

In 2429, Paris was the location of the now-infamous public decloaking of the USS Century over the city, an event witnessed by over one million people. The long-lost ship had been located in the Beta Quadrant by the crew of the USS Discovery, who had also learned about Admiral Richard Edgerton's secret as the leader of the Neo-Essentialist movement. In order to protect themselves from covert action by the Neo-Essentialists, they decloaked the Century in the skies over Paris and made themselves public figures.

The Paris metroplex dominated the entire Ile-de-France region, covering some 12,000 square kilometres, and the downtown area had a population approaching sixteen million people. On Stardate 2.1607, a Neo-Essentialist thaleron weapon, fired from orbit, destroyed the city of Paris, killing twenty-eight million people in the worst single-incident loss of life in Human history. The Paris metroplex was incinerated, with many of its ancient buildings badly sundered, leaving the city's future in serious doubt.

A rebuilding programme was instituted by the Federation, and remains ongoing today. The immediate area around the Arc de Triomphe has been cleaned, with the goal of moving up the Champs d'Elysses to the Place de la Concorde itself. Across the rest of the city, similar efforts are underway.
