USS ANUBIS (NCC-18501)

The USS ANUBIS, NCC-18501, is a Scarab-class cruiser that was launched 2419. The second Starfleet vessel to bear the name, the Anubis was designated as one of four special intelligence-gathering starships, with a fixed focus of purely intelligence-related missions. While capable of defending itself, the ship was primarily designed to avoid detection and escape confrontation, with sensor blocking fields and heavy ablative armour to help mask its power signature.

Launched under Captain James Simmons in early 2419, the Anubis was assigned to New Alexandria as its base of operations. This highly-classified Starbase was constructed inside a hollowed-out asteroid that in turn lay within the soupy Giza Nebula. New Alexandria was specifically chosen for its out-of-the-way location, far from traditional shipping routes and away from any prying eyes.

After a six-month shakedown cruise, the Anubis' first mission was a rescue - the USS Suttner had become disabled in the Bartan system thanks to the actions of a saboteur. Although the Suttner was repaired and departed under her own steam, the saboteur escaped.

The Anubis was then assigned to an intelligence-gathering mission in the Delta Quadrant, where the Hirogen were behaving more aggressively than usual toward the Borg Federation. The Anubis' last report to Starfleet was that she was entering the transwarp conduit that would transport her to the Delta Quadrant.

Many theories were postulated as to her fate. Had she been destroyed? Had the transwarp conduit deposited her somewhere else, perhaps a similar but alternate universe? As time went on and nothing more was heard, Starfleet eventually listed the ship is Missing.

That status was dramatically changed during the Battle of Earth on stardate 2.1611, when the Anubis reappeared leading a fleet in support of Starfleet. In the aftermath, it became known that she had been part of Admiral Charles Koniki's secret New Alexandria project for the past several years.
