THE BATTLE OF EARTH

The Battle of Earth was the culmination and final battle in the two-year conflict between the Neo-Essentialists and loyalist elements of Starfleet. At stake was the future of Humanity's participation in the Federation. With the peoples of the Federation beginning to chafe under Neo-Essentialist rule, and Starfleet united following the 'Civil War' incident in the Elandipole system, the stage was set for the ultimate confrontation.

Richard Edgerton, the leader of the Neo-Essentialists, had launched a planetary network of thaleron-generating satellites that were capable of irradiating all life on the Earth's surface. To prove that he was committed to his cause, he destroyed the city of Paris with one of these Aegis weapons during the late summer of 2431, killing 28 million people in the worst single holocaust in Human history.

Starfleet responded, managing to circumvent the planetary satellite network by creating a new type of cloaking device. Intelligence work on the surface gleaned the location of Edgerton's secret underwater bunker in San Francisco Bay.

A strike team was sent to take out the bunker, while the united Starfleet engaged the satellite network in an orbital battle to determine the fate of the Earth and future path of Humanity. The advanced weapons of the Aegis satellites caused carnage amongst the fleet, resulting in the loss of many famous starships, most notably the USS Century.

Ultimately, victory was won in both theatres of operation. The strike team succeeded in penetrating Edgerton's underwater lair - the madman himself was killed. With their help, the Aegis network was taken offline and the Earth - the capital world of the Federation - was saved. The Neo-Essentialist movement was dealt a fatal blow, and almost forty billion people across the surface of the Earth were liberated from the fascistic rule of Richard Edgerton.
