VULCANS

VULCANS are the dominant sentient species of 40 Eridani II (the planet is also known as Vulcan). They are humanoid, tending to be taller than the Human average, with dark hair, although their skin colours tend to run the gamut from pale white-green to dark ebony. Their most distinctive physical feature is their pointed ears.

Originating on a dry desert world, Vulcans have evolved many traits that are better adapted to survive in hot environments. They do not require much water, possess a transparent inner eyelid, and their epidermis is a two-way waterproof shield, making them unable to sweat. Their blood is based on the element copper, not iron, which gives their blood its famous green colour.

After a history of constant inter-tribal warfare, a great philosopher named Surak led the Vulcans to unification by embracing logic instead of emotion. To this day, Vulcans practice rigorous control of their emotions.

They made First Contact with Humans in 2063, having previously made contact with Andorians and Tellarites. Vulcans and Andorians were rivals as they expanded across their neighbouring star systems, and came perilously close to war in the 2150s. Through Human mediation, both Vulcans and Andorians recognised that greater strength would come through unity, and all three species, along with the Tellarites, formed the United Federation of Planets in 2161.

Once the most advanced race in their immediate galactic neighbourhood, the Vulcans have since been overtaken, especially by Humans. Where once Vulcans oversaw Humanity's transition into galactic politics, now Humans are the driving force of the Federation and Starfleet.

Today, there are a significant number of Vulcans in Starfleet, mainly serving as scientists of various types. Their clear-minded logic also makes them a good choice for diplomacy, and First Contact missions on behalf of the Federation. They are efficient and skillful administrators, are permanent members of the Federation Council, and remain one of the cornerstones of the great alliance.
