ANDORIANS

The dominant sentient species on Andoria, ANDORIANS are bipedal humanoids who are both warp-capable and one of the founding and permanent members of the United Federation of Planets.

Recognisable by their distinctive ice-blue skin and silver hair, Andorians do not have the same genetic variances in skin, eye and hair colour as other humanoid species. They have a very high metabolic rate, and tire somewhat easily compared to other races. Their circulatory system (complete with blue-coloured blood) is deep within their bodies, necessitating the administration of medicine through their muscles instead of blood vessels. Their antennas are not ears - they are extra-sensory organs that are capable of detecting electrical fields, subtle changes in temperature, and assisting in balance.

Andorian society was (and still is, to a certain degree) dominated by an honour system, and the supersedence of the military led them to an aggressive foreign policy once they moved into space. They achieved warp capability almost a millennium before Humans, but thanks to their relatively small population, they expanded slowly, forming a small empire of colony worlds. They came into contact with both the Vulcans and the Tellarites, competing for living space with the former and resources with the latter. Competition threatened to escalate into armed conflict several times, until the arrival of Humans onto the galactic stage. After several false starts, the Andorians came to see that strength came through unity, and became one of the founders of the new United Federation of Planets.

Today, there are some thirty-six billion Andorians spread across the Federation, working in every walk of life, including many hundreds of thousands in Starfleet. The current President of the United Federation of Planets hails from this people.
