PSIONICS

There are several species in the Federation and beyond with POWERS OF THE MIND. These extra-sensory gifts are often benign, but can occasionally be dangerous.

Species with psionic powers are able to tap into the so-called 'psionic field' - the theoretical medium through which unspoken thoughts and feelings are communicated through empty space. In a similar way that Human eyes subconsciously see a range of colours in the EM field without conscious effort, so too do psionics give effect to their powers.

Some species in the Federation are fully psionic - Vulcans, Betazoids, Aenar, Ullians as examples - while in other species, like Humans, psionics only appear rarely from generation to generation. It is theorised that Human psionics in history were the inadvertent focus of their homeworld's superstitions regarding witches and magic. Today, although Human psionic activity has been documented in select individuals, there is no widespread understanding of the phenomenon in Human society, whereas psionically-active species like Vulcans and Betazoids provide extensive training to gifted individuals.

It is important to note that while the effects of psionics can be measured upon matter (through telekinesis, for example), the existence of the 'psionic field' itself cannot be scientifically quantified. Despite centuries of research, there is currently no technology in existence that can directly manipulate the field, let alone confirm its existence.
