PRESIDENT SARDAK

SARDAK OF VULCAN is the former President of the United Federation of Planets, although his succession to the office was controversial and disputed.

Originally the Federation Secretary of Temporal Affairs, Sardak was catapulted into the upper echelons of government when Richard Edgerton's Neo-Essentialist movement engineered the assassinations of President Moray and most of his cabinet. Only two government ministers survived the carnage - Sardak and Thoris P'Trell, the Federation's Secretary of the Interior. Both of them managed to escape Earth aboard the USS Demeter while Edgerton imposed martial law on the Federation's capital worlds.

Travelling with a rag-tag fleet of loyal Starfleet officers to the distant Elandipole system, Secretaries Sardak and P'Trell were respectively hailed by Starfleet as the legitimate Vice-President and President of the Federation, being the only two remaining legally-elected members of the former Federation government.

When Thoris P'Trell was revealed as the Neo-Essentialist agent known as Subject Blue and arrested, Sardak succeeded to the office of President. He maintained the USS Demeter as a mobile command ship through the burgeoning civil war, and remained a public figurehead for the loyalist Starfleet. As the last surviving legitimately elected member of the former democratic government, Sardak was one of the primary targets for the Neo-Essentialists, who would have stopped at nothing to kill him.

Following the defeat of the Neo-Essentialista and the restoration of the Federation, Sardak agreed to temporarily assume the office of President, given that the constitutionality of his accession was in question. He astonished the Federation by engineering a political move on the reconstituted Council to eject Earth from its permanent position on the Council - a move designed to curb Human political power in the Federation. Shortly after this act, Sardak resigned the Presidency, leaving the office vacant.

Sardak is a calm, rational man, always cautious and willing to give ear to a visitor. After his resignation of the office, he retired to Mount Seleya on Vulcan to continue his studies of the kolinahr.

In 2433, he accepted an appointment as the Federation's Ambassador to the Romulan Star Empire. He remained on Romulus for two years, negotiating a new Treaty of Peace between the two powers. Today, he has returned to Vulcan and has resumed his study of the kolinahr.
