Mission: Aftermath

“Iceman” (Contd – “Epilogue”)

Location: Starfleet Cape Town Base
Scene: Hanger
Stardate: 2.170102.2158

The base was quiet, the fighter wing had left, assigned to Vulcan as part of an increase in Starfleet presence with Vulcan how housing the Federation Council. Only a single member of the wing and it's support staff had not made the transfer, and that single member, a flight leader, was perhaps the one most likely to have expected to actually make the transfer.

The human pilots had transferred out with no more complaint than any other, reserving their own thoughts on the altering politics of the Federation for more appropriate times, but the lone Vulcan on the rosta now stood at a console in the empty hanger bay of the Cape Town base running through the command cycle that would leave the facility in standby for the caretaking crew that were due the following evening.

There had been a great amount of speculation among the other pilots as to why Stavik had not been transferred with the rest of the wing, Commander Toth had approached him offering to contact Starfleet Operations but Stavik had declined. While the logic of his reassignment escaped him with the information he had there seemed little logic in objecting to the order, the wing would do well without him, the pilots he had trained and commanded were skillful and after giving what assistance he could in their relocation Stavik had thrown himself in to the technical specifications of his new assignment, the USS Phoenix.

There was no available holodeck simulation for him to experience flying the Phoenix although a rough approximation with some alterations to the standard Galaxy class starship available had tested his ability to fly a capital ship once more and he was satisfied with his performance given the present circumstances.

As the standby commands cycled system after system, powering each down entirely or to a low power mode Stavik left the console and walked towards the one fighter remaining in the hanger.

His eye ran over the stark lines of the rapier as he walked slowly around, his hand moving to touch the tip of one of the 6 phaser cannons arrayed on the defensive vessel. As he stepped around the edge of the wing and looked at the top fin he read the number engrained in him from years of flying the same vessel, F/D 01-304. There was no call sign written on the hull of his fighter as many of the other pilots had taken to doing, Stavik had never particularly seen the need for the nicknames although he had never stopped his pilots from using them.

They had even taken to referring to him as Iceman, although none of them had slipped up and addressed him as such with any expectation of an answer.

The wall monitors were all dark by now and as the main lights died, to be replaced only by low level lights near the base of the bulkheads Stavik stopped walking around the fighter and without looking back strode past the console, picking up the single bag on the way.

The remainder of his belongings had already been transported to the Phoenix and now he would join them via the public transporter network and a stop in San Fransisco.

Location: USS Phoenix
Scene: Transporter Room 1

Stavik stepped off the transporter pad and addressed the crewman behind,

“Lieutenant Stavik, permission to come aboard?”

“Granted sir.” Rumbled the Kasheeta crewman.

Stavik nodded thanks and, rechecking the bag over his shoulder, stepped out in to the bustle that was a starship preparing for departure after major engineering work.

Before he had even taken a step a moving officer had glanced at him, rattled off a comment about the Chief Engineer, carried on by and then turned back to welcome him aboard, all without comment from Stavik.

It was only a few steps later when a young blue skinned bundle of energy approached, seeming to make space around her as she wove through everyone busy at work.

“Oh, a Vulcan! Now that will be fun, I have just the drink for you!”

The young woman chuckled as Stavik’s eyebrow rose, a move quite stereotyped for a Vulcan.

There was one thing for certain, the Phoenix would be quite a different assignment for Stavik.
