Mission: The Lights of Hyperion

“Roasted”

(Continued from “Burns”)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: U.S.S. PHOENIX

Scene: Varn/Warren Quarters

Stardate: [2.5]0527.1122

Time seemed to slow to a crawl as Thomas watched the readout on the tricorder that Sylvia managed to toss him. It was not possible yet there it was before him, a ball of radiant energy seeming to lick at the covers of the bed with electrical discharges. The tricorder itself was going haywire alerting its user to the traces of radiation that were now filling the space that occupied the bedroom of the quarters.

“Thomas,” Sylvia’s voice rang clear with fear and doubt.

Shaking his head Thomas held up his hand, “don’t move, it’s giving off amounts of beta-radiation and ultraviolet rays as if it was a small sun.”

Sylvia slid her body behind the door frame only allowing her left shoulder and head to appear from behind the door frame itself. Watching with a mixture of fear and curiosity she listened carefully doing all that Thomas had requested. Moving slowly around the room Thomas continued to scan the orb before stopping as the tricorder sent another warning about radiation building.

Closing the tricorder Thomas held out his hand, “Sylvia, we need to get out of here the radiation is building quickly.”

As the young woman moved to shift her weight from behind the door frame there was a sudden flash of light then an explosion tossing Thomas into the windows that were in the room. Sylvia had braced herself to the point that the blast only grazed her shoulder spinning her against the wall before sliding down it. As Thomas fell to the floor all he could feel himself trying to say was run, Sylvia run; but, nothing was managed to be emitted from his throat.

Moments passed as Sylvia sat there her head spinning trying to regain its cognitive processes. As her stomach seemed to lurch forward she held herself together long enough to call out, “medical emergency crew quarters.”

Scene: Sickbay

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It only took moments before the computer localized the call for help sending notification to sickbay; but, with all the activity and low personnel Cade had decided to beam them directly to sickbay. As the bodies materialized Cade moved over before shaking his head at the two bodies. Thomas once again was lying on his stomach due to damage to his wings and unconscious while Sylvia lie there trying to keep her composure as the sickening feeling subsided.

“Lieutenant Warren, you had a minor concussion which we have quickly taken care of,” Cade stated moving over to Thomas scanning him, “but you two need to remember…”

Cade’s face twisted as the tricorder began showing reading of radiation build up in Thomas’ body along with skin damage from exposure to ultraviolet rays. Turning back to Sylvia and finding small amounts of radiation in her body Cade began treatment of radiation exposure. Handing the hypospray to Suvek to continue treatment nodded, “verify the pregnancy isn’t in any danger and continue treating her.”

Walking over to Thomas Cade slowly lifted the winged man up looking at the discoloration of his face compared to the back of his neck, “you forgot to baste wingboy.”

Suvek turned to Cade, “doctor?”

Cade smiled, “oh nothing Lieutenant just in the mood for turkey.”
