Mission: The Lights of Hyperion

“Complication”

(Continued from “Charity”)

Location: USS PHOENIX

Scene: Shanty Town Section Beta

Stardate: [2.5]0513.2200

“No no, this one is the one that is more like a Earth dog and domesticated. This one is the one that would be more likely to rip your face off and eat it,” Thomas stated looking at each animal as the marine eyeballed them both.

“Sir, are you,” the marine began.

Rubbing his brow Thomas sighed, “fine, look I know this one is all fluffy and pink and innocently looking; but, do you see the shape of its irises? They are the shape and configuration of a animal that can see in the dark most likely variations on the infrared spectrum at that. It’s mouth is not that small port that you are immediately drawn to; but, it literally covers most of its body which you can see with the small separation in the fur.”

Looking at the small round fluff of fur the marine shook his head not seeing what the man was seeing except for something that a young human girl would want out of the cage and to love and squeeze, possibly name George. Thomas huffed before turning to the replicator behind them which for the moment was not being used by some miracle and ordered a small plate of raw meat cubes. Motioning to the bowl then to the animal Thomas throws one at the creature he was claiming to be a dog which looked like a rabid mucus covered pig cat watching as it licks the cube before pawing at it. Lifting his brow Thomas throws to cubes to the puff ball watching as its body seems to split in half revealing a mouth full of teeth sharpened and in three rows. Reaching out with its tongue he forces them into its mouth before growing backing into the cage corner while it ate.

“Holy…” the marine stated walking backwards slightly.

Smirking and handing the marine the bowl Thomas nodded, “do not get the scent on your hands or it will try to get them as soon as you get close.”

“Ah Mr. Varn I presume,” a smooth voice interjected as Arthur Embry emerged from the crowd as if he was watching from the shadows.

Turning and straightening his coat Thomas spotted Arthur and the unusual stain on his clothing, “yes, may I help you?”

“No, no Mr. Varn it is I who would like to assist you,” Arthur stated smiling, “I come to see if there is anything that you require and if you have had any issues with our community.”

Raising an eyebrow Thomas looked to the marine escort, who was threatening to shoot the fluff ball who had wrapped its tongue around his hand licking off the meat flavor while simultaneously trying to pull him closer for a large lunch, then back to Arthur, “not that I am aware we are quite well taken care of, Mr?”

“Oh pardon me, Embry, Arthur Embry,” he stated reaching out a hand, “unofficial liaison between Shantytown as we call it and the ship's crew like yourself.”

“Ah, well thank you; but, i’m merely here in a supportive role not as a member of the crew,” Thomas stated examining a bird that was brought over.

Arthur looked over the man and finally noticed an extreme lack of uniform and rank insignia, “oh, I see. It’s good to see that the civilian community at large joins with the Starfleet personnel's beliefs.”

“Uh huh,” Thomas stated pulling his hand back from the bird, “excuse me for a moment. Varn to Lieutenant Lahav.”

[[Go ahead Mr. Varn,]] the tellarite’s voice came in plain.

Thomas nodded looking back to the bird, “I have an avian species in Shantytown Section Beta that is showing signs of an infection. I am requesting immediate extraction and quarantine.”

[[Understood Mr. Varn locking on and transport beginning,]] Lahav stated as the bird and cage dematerialized before everyone’s eyes.

“Lieutenant, I would recommend a complete scan of the Shantytown for any other avian species that may have been exposed to any potential biological threat,” Thomas stated moving back to Arthur.

[[While I appreciate the suggestion Mr. Varn I do not believe that would be necessary,]] Lahav replied dryly.

“Listen Lieutenant, do you want to explain to the Captain if an outbreak takes place and has a chance to mutate possibly into something more infectious by someone ingesting one of these birds,” Thomas stated looking up waiting for a reply.

There was silence on the comline longer than normal, [[Very well, we will keep you informed.]]

“Thank you Lieutenant,” Thomas stated closing the line.

Arthur smiled watching Thomas work, “you said you weren’t Starfleet Mr. Varn; but, I suspect there is more there than you are letting on.”

“Yes, I was at one time Starfleet,” Thomas replied trying his best to quickly end this conversation.

Arthur nodded, “I could tell, you see…”

[[Foster to Varn, please report to sickbay,]] Cade’s voice rang through cutting Arthur off, [[ before you ask wingboy it’s Sylvia.]]

Thomas’ eyes widened as he gripped the padd he was holding and turned to his escort before bolting to the door. Arthur looked around before shaking his head at the second individual to rush away from him only to stop putting two and two together, “I wonder if that is the young woman from earlier.”

The doors to the sickbay opened slower than Thomas would have liked causing him to leap through turning sideways. Looking around following the finger of Suvek he rounded the corner before coming upon Cade who was in mid scan of Sylvia again. Thomas slowly moved closer only stopping as Cade held his hands up and stopped Thomas, “Ok, Thomas now wait I have to prepare you for this.”

“Prepare me for what Cade,” he stated trying to look at Sylvia who didn’t move, “what's wrong Cade?”

Sighing Cade pointed his finger, “now listen to me I have to ask you something serious and it is important as it could save someone's life.”

Looking Cade straight in the eye Thomas took a deep calming breath, “what?”

“Good. Now I must know, how exactly did you do it? Where the wings a hinderance and most of all how was she,” Cade stated smiling almost glowing with pride.

“Uh, what,” Thomas asked now looking at Sylvia who was shaking her head.

“Oh come off it wingboy, or should I say wingman,” Cade laughed wrapping his arm around Thomas walking him to Sylvia’s side, “I know exactly what you two have been doing and so will everyone in oh let’s say…”

“Foster,” Sylvia interjected.

“Nine months or so,” Cade winked before walking away.

“Nine, months, wait,” Thomas turned looking at Sylvia, “are you?”

Sylvia’s face lifted slightly as she physically tried to hide the glow, “yes.”

It had only been five minutes since Cade and Suvek had walked away replicating something Cade stated would be helpful and a human tradition. Turning the corner with a cake that read congratulations on entering the neutral zone the duo stopped as the argument erupted louder than it had been.

“What do you mean, what happened Thomas,” Sylvia shouted, “you were there, we both were there.”

Thomas’ face showed worry and concern, “I know, I know but we both were taking our shots.”

“Well, obviously something didn’t work,” Sylvia stated throwing her hands in the air, “what are you saying that you don’t want this?”

Thomas shook his head, “oh no, I do; but…”

“But what Thomas,” Sylvia stated as the man slumped down onto a biobed.

He sat there his mind racing with possibilities and complications caused by what could be a genetic nightmare. He had never considered having children after the genetic experiments that turned him into what he is now. He had always assumed that the shots would stop anything from happening; but, obviously that wasn’t the case anymore. Who knew what would happen or what would develop within Sylvia or what it would do to her.

Throwing her hands up on the air Sylvia growled, “that’s it. Thomas I have been very supportive during all that you’ve gone through and helping you try to deal with everything; but, now Thomas, now is your time to step up and realize that there is someone. No, someones that need your help and be strong. I need you Thomas, no, we need you.”

Standing there Thomas’s hands had almost begun to sweat as he clasped them together waiting. Looking around and rocking on his heels his head turned quickly as the door slid open.

“Yes?”

“I need to be reinstated,” Thomas stated staring at an unprepared Eve Dalziel.
