Personality & Traits

General Overview Jake is, above all, self-interested. His only care is for himself; he long ago decided the universe could do nothing but take from him, and decided he would never again open himself up to that kind of hurt. He's pragmatic, with an engineer's disciplined mind, but he lacks any real work ethic. He has a kind of natural charisma, but he's often bitter and hurtful towards others, and seldom shows any interest in making friends or maintaining relationships. Jake will lie, cheat, steal, and betray if he thinks it will advance his position. He prefers not to kill, though he will do it if he needs to.

Personal History Originally from a parallel dimension commonly referred to as "the Mirror Universe", Jake Crichton is a man who doesn't seem to belong anywhere. In his own universe, he was the eldest son of a mining family. His early years were filled with love, and early on Jake had already displayed a knack for engineering.

Things changed when the mining vessel Jake called home was detained by the Cardassian military. Accused of smuggling weapons to insurgents, Jake's parents were found guilty before the trial even began, and were executed within hours. Jake and his younger brother, William, were sent to a Cardassian work camp. Jake's knowledge of technology made him valuable, but conditions in the camp were harsh. Jake's brother William starved while Jake was fed double rations. When Jake tried to sneak food to William and was caught, the Cardassian guards punished William while making Jake watch. In the end, he could do nothing as his brother wasted away before his eyes. When William died, Jake resolved he would survive not only the prison camp, but anything else the galaxy had left to throw at him.

Jake eventually escaped the camp, selling out several of his fellow prisoners to do it. Free of captivity, Jake eventually fell in with a pirate crew. His insubordinate nature led to his new captain, Daisy Byrne, to cut out Jake's left eye. Though the incident was traumatic, Jake later realized that Daisy could do little more to him; as long as she required his expertise, she could not afford to kill him or injure him so badly he could not perform his duties. Jake made the most of his hard-earned tenure aboard her ship.

Eventually Jake's crew decided to cross into a parallel universe, where they had heard the pickings were more ripe, Their ship emerged not far from GATEWAY Station. A confrontation with the crew left them in custody in the GATEWAY's brig, and for the first time Jake Crichton came face to face with his alternate-dimension doppleganger.

After helping save his duplicate's life, Jake was sent to a Starfleet stockade with a reduced sentence. After serving two years, Jake once again escaped captivity. Resolving never to return to his own universe, Jake bummed around the edges of civilized space for several years, before eventually falling in with the crew of the pirate vessel The Annabelle's Lament. When the Lament's captain, Cassidy Rainner, accepted a contract to attack a Federation fleet, Jake once again crossed paths with his duplicate. In a secret research facility on LAVENZA II.
