Physical Description Admiral Ves is of average height and weight for a humanoid. He has paler skin than most Trill, but he is generally of a sunny disposition, with a ready smile and encouraging word.

He has clubbed thumbs on both his hands, a harmless genetic trait observed in many humanoid species. Although his thumbs are shorter than average, they have not hindered his career, and many people who come into contact with him don't even notice them.

Ves is the third host of the Rohul symbiont. As such, he carries the memories and emotional attachments to the families of the previous two deceased hosts.

Personality & Traits

General Overview He is a friendly, affable man who is always pleasantly behaved and is kind to his staff. Truth be told, Admiral Ves prefers this stage of his work - being in command and delegating tasks - to the years he put in as a research scientist. It's not that he's lost his interest in his field, but he feels that time is moving on now, and younger, fresher minds must take the lead.

His staff are grateful to be working for him, as he's invariably good-natured and is never upset by a mistake or accidental omission in their work.

He hardly ever talks about the Ves symbiont, perhaps out of a sense of modesty, and doesn't often verbalise any memories of the symbiont's past two lives.
Strengths & Weaknesses Admiral Ves's greatest strength at this stage of his career is simply in supervision. His working day usually consists of reading reports, giving interviews to specialised media, and occasionally attending a political briefing. He is an expert administrator and public speaker, keenly aware of what is good science and what is quackery, and he has made it a priority to eliminate the latter.

However, his years away from practical research work are starting to show. More and more often he finds himself asking his staff for supplementary information on a new theorem, as he has forgotten some of the base material. In this way, he is slowly but surely losing his edge as a scientist and moving into becoming a simple departmental administrator.

Aside from one tour of duty at the beginning of his career, Admiral Ves has never served in a starship or Starbase, something always likely to grate on those who find themselves under his authority.
Ambitions Like all Trill, he desires to protect the Ves symbiont as the most important thing in his life. Otherwise, he is determined to do a good job in his department and remain outspoken in support of good scientific ethics and methodology.
Hobbies & Interests He likes to swim, and often spends leisure time at one of San Francisco's public beaches. He is also generally interested in all branches of science, trying to keep up to date with the latest news, and is especially interested in anything to do with xeno-ecology, his old field and first love.

Although it is not synonymous with the science of ecology, Rohul Ves is a strident advocate of environmentalism. He opposes animal testing in any of Starfleet's facilities, and argues against the transplantation of non-native species to new class M worlds. His approach to ecology might almost be described as holistic.

Personal History As a young man, the Trill Rohul joined Starfleet, but when he graduated there was another Joining waiting for him - that with the symbiont Ves. It caused a temporary hiatus from his Starfleet career as he underwent the Joining, absorbing Rohul's two previous lifetimes of experience and knowledge.

Access to the symbiont's wisdom kick-started Rohul's career in Starfleet. He spent a few years charting planets on a starship, and then found himself in demand as an experience ecologist, spending years at a time on worlds that had been slated for colonisation. As part of the advance team, he was often one of the first people to lay eyes on these virgin worlds, studying and analysing the interactions of native organisms with their environment.

Rohul quickly gained a reputation for his enthusiasm and skill at his job, but also for his careful, methodological approach, eschewing fast-tracks or easy answers. As an instructor in Starfleet Academy, he encouraged his students in this, gaining a name for himself for the way he spoke out against unethical science, even if it yielded a positive result.

Rohul got the opportunity to put these beliefs into action when he was selected to be the head of Starfleet Science's Life Sciences division. His eight-year tenure meant sweeping new rules for terraformers and colonists, some of which were criticised as being too liberal in their practical applications, but he was nevertheless selected to become the Deputy Chief of Starfleet Science in 2420.

Under the Neo-Essentialist regime, Rohul Ves was passed over for promotion in favour of a Human candidate. When the Neo-Essentialists were finally defeated, he was elevated to the Admiralty and became the Chief of Starfleet Sciences.
