SHIKAHR

The city of SHIKAHR is the de facto capital of the planet Vulcan, and nowadays of the United Federation of Planets. It lies on the edge of the great desert known as the Forge, some 30 miles south of Mount Seleya. It encompasses the ancient ruins of the T' Karath Sanctuary and is the location of the famous Vulcan Science Academy.

The city's growth was ensured because of its proximity to an underground water source. Solar energy was used to power the construction and to help irrigate the local hinterland, and provides almost all the city's energy needs today. Water recycling and purifying are also important municipal industries, so much so that ShiKahr is one of the few locations on Vulcan to have a public garden.

There are almost nine million people living in ShiKahr and its surrounding metroplex, called the ShiKahr District. The city's climate is perennially hot, dry, and sunny.

The Vulcan Science Academy, which has its primary campus within the District limits, is an institution that predates the founding of the United Federation of Planets, dating all the way back to the Age of Surak. It studies all fields of science, is home to some of the greatest minds in the quadrant, and competition for entrance is fierce.

The city is also home to the Hall of Voices, a large amphitheatre that was chosen as the meeting site of both the Federation Assembly and Council following the relocation of the Federation's capital to Vulcan in early 2432. Today, ShiKahr remains the capital city of the Federation.
