FEDERATION COMMITTEES

As part of its decision-making process, the United Federation of Planets has a number of specialised COMMITTEES and Bureaus that have jurisdiction over some part of Federation policy. There are committees and bureaus for all manner of government departmental function, such as:

- The Bureau of Colonisation
- the Department of Economic Affairs
- the Commission for Sentient Rights
- the Department of Temporal Investigations
- the Department of Commerce and the Treasury

Each of these bodies is headed by a Secretary, who in practice is the elected delegate from their homeworld to the Federation Assembly. In this way, the positions of the various Secretaries are shared, since it is not possible for one member planet to hold more than one Secretary position. It is, however, possible for a member world to be elected to both the Federation Council and to a Secretary position. For example, Sardak of Vulcan was both the Federation's Secretary of Temporal Investigations as well as being the Council member for Vulcan, two separate duties.

Each Secretary can recommend a bill of law to the Federation Assembly, which votes on it in the usual manner. In this way, the machinery of government in the Federation is kept going.
