PERSONAL HISTORY
Alex Towers remembers little of his life before the Corps. He was born into the lawless backwater colony called New Vegas, a Ferengi-owned trading and gambling outpost on the outskirts of Federation space. Never knowing his father, Towers lived with his mother, who struggled to provide for herself and her child. His mother tried her best to hide the truth from him, but Towers knew from an early age that his mother was a prostitute, working for a cruel and lecherous Ferengi. When Towers was 13 years old, Emma Towers was murdered by her Ferengi boss. Young Alex found himself alone, living on the street of New Vegas, stealing scraps of food to eat.

When a UFP Marine Corps transport ship landed at the colony, Towers was immediately interested. With no ties keeping him on New Vegas, and eager to leave his life of poverty behind, Towers agreed to enlist, and was taken to the nearest Federation starbase. Towers lied about his age to enlist, telling them he was 18 even though he was only 16. By the time this was discovered, Towers had already completed basic training - a reprimand was placed in his official file, but seeing as how Towers had literally no where else to go, he was allowed to remain in the Corps.

Towers excelled in basic training, quickly distinguishing himself from the rest of the (older) cadets. While he wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, Towers had an iron will and unshakeable determination. He endured the rigorous training without complaint, dealt with beatings and abuse from older cadets without giving up. The hard life he had led up to this point served him well - no matter what they did to him, Towers had been through worse.

Towers rose through the ranks quickly - after saving his platoon-leader’s life on Aldar Prime, he was promoted to squad leader. Then, after leading his squad in a brave charge against an enemy fortification on the third moon of Dutara, Towers was promoted to platoon leader. So has his career progressed- Towers has a reputation for success in dire circumstances, as well as for fierce personal courage on the battlefield. Almost all of his numerous scars were received on the battlefield.

Towers is a gruff, taciturn man. He comes off as older than he really is, and almost never relaxes. Even when off duty, Towers leads an ordered, regimented life; he often spends his down-time working out or practicing personal-combat drills. When he does decide to take a little personal time, Towers likes to be alone; camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting, and numerous other hobbies that allow him to relax and forget about the burdens of duty.

As a commander, Towers is a stern taskmaster. He has little pity for those who chafe under his leadership- complaints are heard by squad leaders, not the CO. Towers is only interested in getting his men to perform as admirably as possible, and he is very good in that regard. However, Towers is also fiercely loyal to his men- he will not hesitate to stick up for them to his own superiors, and he has risked his life more than once to save a wounded comrade.

Following the Neo-Essentialist coup of the Federation government in 2429, Towers was one of the few high-ranking Marine officers that escaped the purges. As the highest-ranking Marine officer in the loyalist fleet, he was named as the new Commandant of the Starfleet Marine Corps the following year.
