DOCTOR BRUCE MADDOX

BRUCE MADDOX (2335 - ) is a celebrated cybernetics expert, most notable for his success in creating a new positronic matrix that advanced the work of Dr. Noonien Soong.

Born in Los Angeles, Maddox didn't stray far from home in his early years, being educated at UCLA. He joined Starfleet on achieving his doctorate, and his skill as a cyberneticist was put to work by Starfleet Science. Maddox held a deep personal interest in the work of Dr. Noonien Soong, the reclusive genius who had managed to create a working positronic matrix the same year that Maddox was born. In 2365, Maddox submitted a proposal to Starfleet to disassemble the android known as Data for research and study. The case was brought before a local JAG officer, and Maddox lost. Nevertheless, he continued his work in cybernetics over many years, forming a working distance relationship with Data, until the android's death in 2379.

Maddox retired from Starfleet in 2397, and was appointed professor of robotics at the Daystrom Institute. It was there that he began work on creating a new positronic matrix based on the work of Dr. Soong. This work was carried out under the supervision of the Federation's High Commission for Sentient Rights to ensure that the legal ruling of 2365 was upheld.

In 2426, Maddox's project (working under the nickname 'The Maddox Institute') came to fruition, when not one but three positronic matrices were created and switched on. These three new Maddox-type androids were 'born' with full working knowledge databases. The only thing they were not programmed with was their place in the universe - under the ruling of 2365, these three new life-forms were given the choice of where they wanted to go, what gender to identify with, and what they wanted to do with their lives. One of them chose to identify as male and join Starfleet, and took the name Byte.

Bruce Maddox was hailed as a genius when news broke of his success. In 2427, he was awarded the Cochrane Medal, the Vulcan IDIC, and the Nobel Prize for Engineering. Today, Professor Maddox lives on Mars and continues his work in cybernetics, while keeping a close watch on the lives of his 'children'.
