THE PHOBOPHAGE

A creature from beyond the known universe, the entity known only as the Phobophage was first encountered aboard Gateway Station during the Second Dominion War. Feeding off the fears of the crew, and even killing a few officers unlucky enough to find themselves in its path, the Phobophage was eventually driven away from the station, but not before leaving deep scars on the Gateway and her crew.

The Phobophage feeds off the psychic energy created by the fear of sentient beings. It targets isolated individuals, often waiting until its prey is alone before it strikes. The entity itself appears to have no physical form; instead, it "manifests" as whatever its prey is most afraid of, and harvests the neural fear energy its victim produces. Such feeding leaves the victim physically and psychically weakened, and can drop them into a coma. In some cases, the manifested form may physically attack its prey - for instance, if the entity manifests as a lion, the lion may physically attack the victim. In these instances, any damage done by the Phobophage's manifestation causes real physical harm, and in the case of extreme attacks my result in the victim's death through trauma, asphyxiation, blood loss, etc. The Phobophage seems to have no preference either way; whether the victim lives or dies, the entity is fed so long as the victim is afraid.

The entity made another appearance in 2432 aboard the USS Phoenix, where it killed 5 crew-members.
