THE MULTIVERSE

The multiverse is the set of finite and infinite possible universes, including the universe in which we live. Together, these universes comprise everything that exists - the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, and the physical laws and constants that describe them.

Multiversal phenomena were documented by the Federation ever since Starfleet began to push back the boundaries of knowledge. With repeated contact with the Mirror Universe, the existence of a multiverse became accepted scientific fact, but it was not until the early 25th century that physical exploration of the multiverse began.

The strength of the barriers between alternate universes can vary. It was easy for the USS Farragut to pass into the Locusta home universe in 2413 using a captured Locusta Dimensional drive, but it seems difficult for the Locusta to penetrate our universe. Theories range from divine providence through to quantum fluctuations on one side of the barrier.

The USS Prophecy, launched in 2414 with a D-drive of her own, was Starfleet's first vessel able to penetrate the veil between universes. As the Prophecy made her way through the multiverse, she recorded the details and differences of each new universe, giving each one a numerical designation.

Given that the number of universes in the multiverse is both finite and infinite at the same time (this principle is called 'quantum superposition'), it seems unlikely that the multiverse will ever be fully explored.
