THOLIAN WEBSPINNER-CLASS STARSHIP

Tholian starships of the 25th century have changed in size and shape from previous eras. The standard Tholian Webspinner-class starship is now several times the size of previous designs and has advanced in both weapons and propulsion systems.

Tholian starships utilise advanced plasma torpedo weaponry that are capable of overloading the shields of front-line Federation starships. They do not seem to use shipboard phaser/disruptors, but their plasma torpedoes are more than effective. They cannot match the speed of their equivalent Federation starships, and do not seem as maneuverable, but there has been no conflict between both powers in two centuries, so the focus of Starfleet Intelligence has been in other directions.

The so-called Tholian Web - a geodesic energy net cast from multiple Tholian starships - is still used to disable starships that drift into Tholian space. Once the energy filaments are spun around the target, the web becomes self-energising, allowing the Tholians to disengage. Over the centuries, their tractor beam technology has advanced in step with shield technology, making the Tholian Web as dangerous as ever.

Although a watchful peace exists between the Tholians and the Federation, Starfleet Intelligence estimates that a military confrontation with a Tholian starship is inevitable if the rumours of a Thal return are true. If so, it may well be time to take a closer look at Tholian ships.
