TRIBBLE

One of the most recognisable species of animal in the galaxy, the TRIBBLE is also one of the most dangerous. They combine heart-warming cuteness with a voracious appetite and an unstoppable asexual reproductive drive. They eat anything and everything and keep eating until nothing is left. Along the way, they convert that nutrition into more tribbles, and then more tribbles.

They resemble small balls of fur, usually around 20cm long and weigh between 30g and 3 kilograms. They were native to the planet Iota Geminorum IV, where they consumed plant matter and their numbers were kept in check by the many species of reptiles on that world. Several surveys of the planet resulted in samples of tribbles being moved off-world, where they have continued to propagate.

Tribbles emit cooing sounds when touched affectionately, and make soothing pets. Since there have been several explosions of tribble populations at inopportune times and places over the years, it is now required that any Federation citizen who owns a tribble must spay it, and the tribble population on each planet in the Federation is tightly monitored.

And as for their homeworld of Iota Geminorum IV? In the late 23rd century, the Klingon Empire sent a fleet to the planet. Using fusion weapons, they incinerated the planet's atmosphere, killing every living thing on the surface in an attempt to exterminate the tribbles. They did not succeed. Today, spayed tribbles can be found everywhere, acting as pets for their owners, just waiting for their next meal...
