THE BORG FLEET

The BORG FLEET retains the distinctive characteristics of their predecessors of the last century. It might be imagined that individualisation would have led to a revolution in starship design, but this is one area where the new Borg prefer established procedures of design and construction.

Their primary starship is still the familiar Cube, although these now come in various sizes. These have been upgraded to take twenty-fifth century technology into account, and each variation of Cube is capable of opening transwarp conduits. The interior systems of each Cube is modelled on existing design, but is also (and acts as) a Network hub.

The Borg crew of a Cube is led by a Director, and instead of naming each Cube, the Borg number them instead. The Borg have rejected traditional naval rank hierarchies, but still recognise the importance of having a command structure. The crew complement of a Cube is also much smaller than might be imagined - even a full-size Cube might hold no more than a few dozen Borg, instead of the tens of thousands of the last century. Since the functions of each Cube are massively automated, the diminished crew act more like systems managers, overseeing the running of the Cube and only intervening in the event of an emergency.

Besides assisting the Federation in a blockading and logistic role in the Second Dominion War, the Borg have not yet been involved in an interstellar conflict, but in 2414 there was a brief civil war between the individualised Borg and the Neo-Collective who sought a return to the old ways. It remains to be seen if newly-individualised Borg can wage a war that requires large-scale strategic movement and fleet-level actions, but to date, nobody has dared to try to find out.
