THE CALNARIAN SOLAR EMPIRE

The CALNARIAN SOLAR EMPIRE is a Beta Quadrant power with which the Federation made disastrous First Contact in 2418 (during the FRPG's 'Savage Stars' trilogy of 2003).

In 2417, the USS Discovery was dispatched to explore the deadworlds of the Beta Quadrant on a 5-year mission, following the faint trails of the Torch series of space probes. A second starship, the USS Archangel, followed several months behind the Discovery, hoping to develop any First Contacts made by the explorator starship.

In late 2417 the USS Archangel was attacked and destroyed by an unknown vessel. The Discovery, unaware that she was moving into the territory of a new and distant alien empire, attempted to make contact with whoever had destroyed the Archangel. She was attacked in turn by the hostile aliens in the star system of Byss. The aliens boarded the Discovery and captured her along with most of her crew.

In their captivity, the crew of the Discovery learned that they had been interned in a small space station by the Calnarian Solar Empire, a violently paranoid and xenophobic warp-capable species who practiced the genocidal extermination of any species they came into contact with. As the Calnarians began to systematically exterminate the crew of the Discovery, the remaining ship's crew managed to escape from their cells en masse, overthrow the guards, regain the Discovery and escape back to Federation space.

Pursued back to Gateway station by a small Calnarian fleet, the Discovery managed to alert Starfleet just as the Calnarians attacked Gateway, throwing themselves at the space station and managing to board it before being thrown back.

In response, Starfleet organised a task force led by the USS Ranger and including the battered Discovery to return to the Byss system to rescue remaining prisoners and to destroy Calnarian shipping facilities there. During the rescue of Federation prisoners on Byss, the Calnarian mining facilities were destroyed by a nuclear holocaust that devastated the planet. Shortly thereafter, the Calnarians transmitted a non-aggression pact to the Federation over subspace radio - this was ratified in late 2418. Since then, there has been no contact between the two powers.
