THE VORTA

The VORTA are a race of genetically-engineered sentient humanoids that were bred by the Founders to be the administrators of the Dominion. Both male and female Vorta exist, although they do not mate with one another. They primarily act as Jem'Hadar commanders and as diplomats, and thanks to genetic alteration, believe the Founders to be living gods.

The Founders' genetic engineering has advanced to a point where each Vorta has several clones that can be awoken in the event of the active Vorta's death. In fact, it is accurate to say that all living Vorta are clones. When a new clone is activated, it retains all the memories and experiences of the previous clone, no matter how far away the other's death took place. This strange phenomenon has been noted, but is not understood by Federation science. Theories range from a form of subspace telepathy, or the existence of some technological transmitter, or simple string theory, which postulates that things which are the same have attachments across space and time that resonate are the quantum level.

They are invariably the Federation's point of contact with the Dominion. When a Vorta is sent to negotiate, they are acting as the voice of the Founders themselves. They are able negotiators and capable politicians.

Since the end of the Second Dominion War, there has been no diplomatic relationship between the Federation and the Dominion. Thus, contact with the Vorta has been almost non-existent.
