TRICORDER (MARK XII)

The TRICORDER was first invented in the early 23rd century as a hand-held scanning device, useful for both shipboard and away team duty. It has since undergone many technological upgrades and design changes over the years. The current iteration is the Mark XII, which has been in service since 2404.

Although not as wide-ranging in data or resolution as shipboard sensors, the hand tricorder is still able to scan and detect a wide variety of information, including all forms of energy, subatomic particles, changes in environment, and subspace emissions.

The current Mark XII tricorder weighs just over half a kilogram and features a flip-open central hinge and a hardened tritanium case. It is completely shatter-proof and practically impervious to water, extreme temperatures and barometric pressures, and shock damage. The medical version comes with a detachable scanner for ultra-high resolution scanning.

Starfleet Research and Development had earmarked the finalisation of the design of the Mark XIII tricorder in 2430, but their plans were cut short by the Neo-Essentialist coup. It is currently unknown when the project will be reactivated, but rumours persist that R&D have invented a device that is both completely touch-screen and voice-activated, making it even easier to use. Perhaps one day tricorders will be as small as communicators, and be able to be worn on the Starfleet uniform?
